Hi. I stumbled upon this community via a cross posting from urban_decay and it looks like great fun. I'm currently finishing my PhD in the history of medicine with a concentration on 20th century nosocomial infections--I write about dead babies, dirty hospitals and pus. Mind if I play here?

Nursing students @ Moorhaven psychiatric hospital, 1957. Those jars on the shelf there look facinating!

Oregon State Hospital [Jun. 1st, 2005|07:33 pm]

I finally got into the abandoned wing of the hospital. This is a hospital that houses prisoners so you do have to get permission on this one. Anyhow, Here are some of the images and you can find the rest here. Unfortunately, the main, and oldest building will soon be torn down.

Here's a quick little gif of the exterior. I actually took an earlier trip to the hospital and got a lot of exterior shots, but you can find those at my site.

Death Tunnel

Looks like one of those ones that might end up being more stupid than scary, but the website is cool, check out the floors!

Interesting gallery of anatomical artwork I found ages ago but didn't think to link here for some obscure reason.

Would you live in a converted asylum? Why or why not?

This was brought on because the local Victorian asylum here is now a village, the Kirkbride and all the surrounding buildings have been turned into housing and apartments. My dad knows the man who converted it and he's going to take me over sometime to get some pictures. In one way I like the idea because it keeps the building whole and I'd rather see buildings reused than sitting around crumbling away. But on the other hand it could be rather creepy.

Also, how about a converted hospital? A few of those seem to be turning into apartments as well.

I'm kind of addicted to my collection of kids annuals, vintage magazines etc. I was going through some of them the other day and found a few nurse drawings so I thought I may as well post them here. Sorry about the quality of some of them, the originals are pretty old!

Just curious, what style of uniforms do you guys prefer? I have a soft spot for the WW1 era nurse uniforms for some reason.

I love looking at stuff like this!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1210&item=7312804703&rd=1

Never brought anything on ebay in my life, but I spend far too much time browsing the medical antiques section.

Anyone know of any good web sites or books with pics of old equpment?

Since our lovely Mod has reminded me, I found this bottle in an antique shop two weekends ago. At one time, it contained some manner of acid. The top part of the label is gone, but under the faded poison warning, there are instructions on how to treat internal or external contact with the contents. I wish I'd been able to get a clearer picture.

Also, at the request of our leader, here are some of the old tools I've acquired recently. I couldn't get very clear pictures of these either, but you can see a bit of the rust. Yes, that is a uterine scraper on the far left of the first picture. I'm thinking of hanging these from the ceiling in my kitchen.

I did manage to scan a few pictures from Sacred Heart, but they haven't been resized and uploaded yet. I promise to share once they're ready. :)
